Nether Portal Calculator

Enter where you are in the Overworld and see exactly where to build the matching portal in the Nether, or the other way round. The Nether is 8 times smaller horizontally, so portals only link when they sit at the right coordinates. Below the converter you can count obsidian for any frame size.

Enter your Overworld coordinates (press F3 on Java, or turn on Show Coordinates on Bedrock).

Build your Nether portal at

100, 64, -25

X
800 ÷ 8, rounded down = 100
Y
64 (height doesn't change)
Z
-200 ÷ 8, rounded down = -25
/tp @s 100 64 -25

The /tp command needs cheats on; run it while you are in the Nether.

Obsidian for your portal frame

Outside size of the frame, from 4×5 up to 23×23.

10 obsidian without the corners, or 14 with them. The opening is 2 × 3 blocks.

The Nether coordinate formula

  • Overworld → Nether: Nether X = Overworld X ÷ 8, Nether Z = Overworld Z ÷ 8, both rounded down. Y is unchanged.
  • Nether → Overworld: Overworld X = Nether X × 8, Overworld Z = Nether Z × 8. Y is unchanged.
  • Rounding down means toward the smaller number, so 29.9 becomes 29 and −29.9 becomes −30. That matters for negative coordinates: −1 ÷ 8 is −0.125, which rounds down to −1, not 0.

How to link two portals

  1. Stand inside your Overworld portal and note its X, Y and Z.
  2. Enter them above and write down the Nether coordinates.
  3. Go through. If the portal the game made for you is far from those coordinates, walk to the calculated spot and build a new portal there.
  4. Break the portal the game generated so it can't steal the link.
  5. Walk back through your new portal to check that it lands at your Overworld portal.

Nether portal calculator FAQ

How do you calculate Nether portal coordinates?

Divide your Overworld X and Z by 8 and round down to get the Nether X and Z. Going the other way, multiply Nether X and Z by 8. The Y coordinate (height) stays the same in both directions.

Why do Nether portals link to the wrong portal?

When you go through a portal, the game converts your position and looks for an existing portal near that spot. In Java Edition it searches 128 blocks around the point in the Overworld but only 16 blocks in the Nether; in Bedrock Edition it searches 128 blocks in both. If another portal is closer to the converted point than yours, you end up there. Build each portal at the exact converted coordinates and links stay reliable.

How much obsidian do I need for a Nether portal?

The smallest frame is 4 blocks wide and 5 tall. That takes 10 obsidian if you skip the corners, which aren't required, or 14 with them. The largest frame is 23 × 23.

Does Y matter when linking portals?

Y isn't scaled, but it still has limits: the Nether has bedrock from Y 0 to 4 and from Y 123 to 127. Keep your Nether portal between those and match X and Z as closely as you can.

How far do I travel through the Nether?

Every block you walk in the Nether covers 8 blocks of the Overworld, horizontally. Walking 1,000 blocks in the Nether moves you 8,000 blocks in the Overworld, which is why players build Nether highways for fast travel.
